Background

Over the past few years the Don Catchment Rivers Trust (DCRT) have installed fish passes at weirs along the Don with the aim of reintroducing salmon to the river. DCRT have also been responsible for “opening up” a walking trail along the river Don.

The Don Valley Way is a walking trail that follows the river Don from Doncaster to Sheffield. It’s 29 miles long and the whole trail can be used by walkers, with approximately half of it suitable for cyclists. it is made up of several, linked heritage walks ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 miles in length. Many are circular and start close to public transport.The trail is part of a Heritage Lottery funded project celebrating the history and wildlife of the River Don.The Don Valley Way takes you on a journey of discovery along the Don. The trail is never far from the railway line which makes it perfect for an interesting walk and return home by train. It’s well waymarked and easy to follow.

The requirement

DCRT required a marketing solution to build awareness of the Don Valley Way. The design had to be visually engaging and provide an overview of the heritage walks.

The solution

I created an illustrated A2 size map which folds down to a standard DL size. I chose this format because we needed a large format in order to convey the range of information. whilst the DL folded size allows the “map” to fit into pockets as well as public information displays within local train stations and other public places.

Each of the nine heritage walks is covered by a brief description and a beautiful illustration. A QR code directs the reader to a more in depth descriptio of each route. There’s also information on the overall trail with links to free audio guide apps.
